I’m not much of a fan so I can’t help the feeling that this wasn’t meant for me. Usually I like to read and recommend science fiction short stories that have really cool gadgets or ideas, or are just plain fun to read. It was also nominated for the Hugo award and was on the shortlist for the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award macs is an unusual but deeply contemplative story.

Stephen rated it it was amazing Jul 09, Obviously this is targetted specifically at the argument that the death penalty is a justifiable form of social retribution, though it also makes one think about general social hysteria and moral panics such as we have seen in the UK over paedophiles this summer. Though it is never explicitly mentioned, it is pretty obvious what the story is referring to — and whom is being talked about.

As an aside, now that more than twenty years have gone by since the incident on which this story is based, would new young readers understand what this is about?


They all seemed the same to me. Terry Bisson is an excellent writer and I suspect that his purpose in writing this story was less cynical than my interpretation, but nevertheless I can’t like this. It is also mean-spirited and somewhat exploitive.

I am leaving my review up because I disagree with the librarian’s decision. Given the security measures we are told about this seems a bit internally inconsistent but I suppose many good stories are told of intrinsically unlikely events. Some of the links on this page are affiliate and sponsored links.

But the reason I find the story distasteful in a way that, say, Swift’s ” A Modest Proposal ” or the Onion’s hilarious ” Bush ‘refuses to dignify’ mass murder allegations ” story are not, is that it describes the aftermath of a real event, the Oklahoma bomb in It consists entirely of dialogue between several people and an investigator.

Terry Bisson uses the fantastic genres as do Kurt Vonnegut or Harlan Ellison, and like them, he is one of the strikingly original voices in short fiction today, with an audience that transcends genre. No trivia or quizzes yet. Terry Ballantine Bisson is an American science fiction and fantasy biswon best known for his short stories, including “Bears Discover Fire”which which won both the Hugo and Nebula awards, as well as They’re Made Out of Meatwhich has been adapted for video often.
