Reading this after Bourdain committed suicide is a bit rough, because while he certainly had a tendency for self-destructive behavior he mentions excessive drinking and developing a heroin addictionhe also clearly loved to feel alive. While certainly it’s a little eerie and a little filerype to read a memoir by someone who subsequently dies, that didn’t spoil my enjoyment of this terrific, brash, funny, and at times introspective, book.
I also have dined at Les Halles, his famous restaurant in New York. To be honest – and this biased my view of the book – I’m not a fan of the “Shock” celebrity in today’s media.
The audio version is read by Bourdain, which may be the most problematic aspect for me. Ciletype, give the book back.

He was a drug addict, but the book kind of skips right over that, which would have been interesting; I’d rather it had been more of a total autobiography than just a chronicle of his history of the restaurant biz, but once again, it’s my fault because that’s clearly what the book is labeled as.

This book is broken into numerous chapters that depict everything from his trouble with drugs, to the co-workers kifchen made their mark on him either good or bad to what confldential should consider when ordering certain dishes in a restaurant.
