He has no friends, no girlfriend but he’s a cool kid. Whoand a host of other genre topics. For instance, did you believe that a mongoose appeared to Belicia and spoke to her? The novel is peppered with them, as any well-respecting Screed of Nerd should be. I could normally infer their meaning, but it was tiring. He received a Guggenheim fellowship, a professorship at MIT, and other honors, but as Diaz got closer and closer to his fortieth birthday, the absence of the long-awaited novel started to tarnish his once glittering reputation.
The ironic, self-deprecating humor shown by both Yunior and Oscar alike is an outlook I love.

Containing elements of magic realism, the author explores our perception of masculinity, power of appearance, love, opression. It’s almost not fair, the way ov build up these books, or movies, or other pop-culture phenomenon as the new best thing ever, because we set up a culture of expectations to which nothing could ever live up.
My life is so horrible!! Things have lire been easy for Oscar, a sweet but disastrously overweight, lovesick Dominican ghetto nerd. Like it was some sorta secret the wondrouw wanted to let the reader in on, that even pretty people feel pain, and in some cases a similar pain to Oscar who was far from pretty.
The mongoose was transplanted westward to the Dominican Republic, just as Oscar’s family was forced out of the Dominican Republic. This is all those 19th century books that assume you know French and what a spinnet is, and you only do if you’ve been privileged enough to get the keys to that.
Thus, the empty pages in Yunior’s dreams signify that the future has yet to be written despite the checkered past, in both his life and in the painful history of oppression and colonialism in the Dominican Republic.
For a first novel, it’s an impressive triumph. The spanish in this book reflects the immigrant experience.
That I read it in two windrous, only because I had to sleep View all 16 comments. Sugar was introduced to the Dominican Republic and Haiti, then Hispaniolathrough colonialism.
Although it was laid out as a story collection, Drown wasn’t billed as such by its publishers. Most of the story is told by an apparently omniscient narrator who is eventually revealed to be Yunior de Las Casasa college roommate of Oscar’s who dated Lola. Diaz has been a middleweight figure on wojdrous literary scene for eleven years, based almost exclusively on his previous and only book Drown, a collection of interconnected stories which, like The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, chronicled the Dominican immigrant experience with a startling freshness.
He wore his semi-kink hair in a Puerto Rican afro, rocked enormous Section 8 glasses…sported an unappealing trace of mustache on his upper lip and possessed a pair of close-set eyes that made him look somewhat retarded. He never lets you forget why they are the way they are- because people go on allowing the world to be the way it is- because people who try to draw wondroua the tiniest lines of decency in the sand under absolute power absolutely corrupted always end up with a boot in the face.
