You think it should feel like honey, but instead it cuts like a knife. It also informed the readers of the kind of sacrifices Jews had to make in order to pass their traditions and religion onto the future generation. Andres, the love of Estrella’s life, was kind, humble, handsome, and the one who got Incantatiln and her mother through the difficult journey.

I had no incnatation that Hoffman had written any books for ‘young adults’ when I requested this from the library. Alice Hoffman Historical Fiction Grandmother, Estrella fearful towards her, but later on she is the only strand of hope that leaves her Grandmother alive. When her grandfather and Estrella begin to bond more than ever he gets taken away from his family members.
She and her best friend, Catalina, are as close as can be, her brother is studying to be a priest, and her grandfather is a respected teacher. The setting of the Spanish town and the determination of everyone to be devoutly Catholic, so as not to be thought Jewish, was riveting and tense. Her brother is away at seminary studying to be a priest. Suddenly, many of the traditions her family upholds behind closed doors begin to make sense to her.
She caught her first glimpse of a different side of her best friend. It’s haunting and beautifully written, in a way that gets deep into your soul until you feel like all you want to do is cry.

I would buy this for a middle school library without any qualms, and it should be found in any high school. So I wasn’t convinced this was the Spanish Inquisition. The slim book packs a powerful story complete with secrets, betrayal, forbidden love, and torture. This causes severe shock in Estrella, who grows ever more distant from Catalina.
Alice Hoffman is an amazing author. May 03, Carol Ward rated it it was amazing. Catalina and Estrella have been growing apart. But as people in her town begin brutally murdering and punishing secret Jews, she finds out secrets about her family and herself that she never knew before.
As the novel progresses, Estrella’s friendship with Catalina becomes strained over Andres, Catalina’s cousin, whom she intends to marry. As others have said, this is a well written book about a little-known period in time.
