The story centers on the life of the Grandet family, circumscribed to the unreasonable avarice of their progenitor, who is characterized as an unscrupulous man and who values to the point of exhaustion the grandef and tinkling of money, symbol of his social and financial ascent.


Charles does not realise that his father, having gone bankrupt, is planning to take his own life. The characters may be fully realized, but they remain caricatures!
