Though not perfect by any means, it succeeds in its aims and provides an insight into a mind-set whose next full literary flowering, after a gap, would be in the Decadent Movement. As for the story, it is a tale of extreme and destructive erotic passion with the standard issue references to the depravities to be found in convents and amongst the clergy but it is rather well written.
