I am completely amazed by Fratres and am listening to all the versions on my online music service as the ptt is new to me. Composition Artist Credits Fratres. Outstanding work, beyond words. Fratres also exists as three-part music with added variations for the solo instrument.

This rotation, two steps at a time, continues for the entire set of nine segments. In order to understand the algorithm behind Fratres, we just need to figure out how to form the eight chords that build up each segment half. The highest virtue of music, for me, lies outside of its mere sound. I’m not particularly interested in SIDs or in classical music rendered with computers or anything, but you have created something really special here. And this is the cause of all of our contradictions, our obstinacy, our narrow-mindedness, our faith and our grief.
In any case, I strongly recommend you to listen to the entire piece at least once before reading on. The particular timbre of an instrument is part of the music, but it is not the most important pprt. Some striking dissonances between the drone and the other voices come out in this version:.

But – in the diagram for the middle voice, wouldn’t there be one less ‘A’ in the very top of the circle – otherwise the falling half of the first segment would be A-A for the middle voice, when reading clockwise? I think that the “circular” step-wise motion is an effect, not a cause. Furthermore, the middle voice will by definition play in between the other two voices.
The following picture illustrates the refuges and segments as a terribly long pedestrian crossing.
Next comes the gentle cascading of Part’s Cantus in Memory of Benjamin Brittenwith its weeping sequences and lone, tolling bell. What a truly breathtaking composition!
