The book is also as much memoir as it is diary, and indeed it’s sometimes a bit disconcerting to read the purportedly twenty-one-year-old Pla look back on his adolescence as if from a great distance much of the diary, then, was obviously revised, and probably rather heavily, much later. Tacodisc rated it liked it Aug 09, Pla is a journalist, and this book is e, so much about narrative and invention—though the apocryphal writing process bring this somewhat into doubt—but about reality and perception and how best to put the first, through the latter, into words on a page. In November ofa year-old Josep Pla left Barcelona for Paris, by his own account a quiet, anxious, insecure young man with average looks, a changeable expression, and a cheap suit — and, the reader knows, a prodigious talent for description.

Josep Pla, a budding young writer, was studying law in Barcelona in when the university was shut down because of the Spanish flu epidemic. Pla, apparently a giant of Catalonian literature, kept an intricate journal of the 22nd year of his life, writing down his experiences when an Influenza plague forced him to leave Barcelona for his small coastal village, as well as his time as cuarerno law student once the disease subsided.

I guess it would be better to read this book in small bites.
