Detective Patrick Hedstrom is on paternity leave.

She’s also distracted from her work by her nervous need to find out more about her mother’s past, as the warm young girl who wrote the few diaries in Erica’s possession is very different from the cold parent that Erica knew.

Those two things are my only real complaints, so I’m surprised I didn’t like it more than I did. If you brace yourself and read this book nonetheless, be ready for I was an avid reader of detective novels in high school, but I haven’t tried this genre for quite a while.

Al ga ik nu eerst wat anders lezen. Daarom heb ik het boek drie sterren gegeven. In addition, the lives of Patrick’s police colleagues come into the fore, with Gosta seeming to be a little more sensitive than his previous golfing obsession would suggest, and Melberg once again revealing a soft heart under his blustering exterior in an amusing subplot.

I was disappointed in this book right from the first chapter when the author had a one year old more advanced than she should have been.

If you lackbberg yourself and read this book nonetheless, be ready for an epidemic of pregnant women, cups of coffee at every page and hour of the day, domestic scenes that are boring as hell – which I soon started to skip – and a detective investigation that is diluted and just as tasteless as a watery cocktail.

The importance of having family is closely observed in this story thus leaving the readers with a feeling of longing for their families. One problem with a translated work is that it’s hard to know where to assign blame for the book’s faults regarding language.

The people are ok, but not all that bright and frankly, also tedious and a bit small minded, IMHO. I decided to lackbeg the classics aside and dive into unknown territories, those of the modern writers of detective fiction.

I have to decide if I should stay in Fjallbacka or not. And I promise, there are some characters in the book which are going to stay with you long after the end of the story.

At no point did Lackberg resort to caricatures. I already had to read two way-too-long birth scenes in this book; there’s no way I can sit through two more of them, plus two more precocious children characters. Another favourite from Camilla Lackberg! I got a better sense of the main characters, Erica and Patrick after 3 novels and grew too really like them. This just wasn’t a very good book. Thanks for telling us about the problem. Sound character building, the writer is compassionate towards them, and doesn’t present them as black or white, good or bad. The style of writing was spot on.
