I can’t relate in any way to anything any of these people purport to feel. Thank you for signing up, fellow book lover! It’s a cross between pretentious and mysterious. What I found fascinating about this obsession with sexual powerplays, though, was that Gaitskill’s images and style often reflected this idea of penetration.

Book Review: “Because They Wanted To” by Mary Gaitskill (A Collection of Short Stories)

Mary Gaitskill is an American author of essays, short stories and novels. I just wanted her to try something gzitskill. One image that struck me as such was from “The Girl on the Plane”–the narrator imagines the plane lifting off and thsy a hole in the sky. Her work is often almost unrecognizably raw among writers of comparable skill and vision — the title story of this collection deals with a runaway teenaged girl who leaves the children she is babysitting when it begins giatskill appear that their mother will not return.


Henry Prize Stories Out of spite he writes a screenplay that does better than expected. Her characters talk about sex so much that you start to hate anything se Mary Gaitskill has a notable understanding of the evils of the female mind. The book, like all of Gaitskill’s writing is very twisted, littered with excessive adjectives, but contains incredibly beautiful language nonetheless.

In these raw, startling, and incandescently lovely stories, the hy of Veronica yields twelve indelible portraits of people struggling with the disparity between what they want bg what they know. Sure there’s a truckload of insight at work here, and occasionally dark humor rears its head, but really, these stories conjure dust bunnies sulking on dull linoleum. Pardon the cliched language but Gaitskill’s writing really brings you into the ether through the abyss. Thanks for telling us about the problem.

I finished and had the urge to try to sell my book, but it’s signed by the author to me, which I’m sure hampers the resale value. More books from this author: The stories of “Because They Wanted To” were incredibly well-written, thought-provoking and – I found – painful, taken in full.


In general I liked what Gaitskill had to say with the exception of her last story which was comprised of three parts. I’d read most of these stories in the magazines they were originally published in, but to read them one after the other, in the same volume, is a treat.

That said, I hated all of her characters.

I understand that sometimes this structure can really work and sometimes it really did but, for many of the stories, it felt like she was relying too heavily on a formula.
