A little too self aware for my taste. That being said, I completely loved the third part, although admittedly it can’t be classed as fiction and yet it slots in as a baaba part at the end and makes parts 1 and 2 far more meaningful than they appeared before.

The author weaves Baba Yaga mythol I don’t know I am sure this was hard to translate, especially with all the rhyming verse, but I have to say I was constantly reminded that it was indeed a translation, by the kind of choppy sentences and paragraph structure, which I found very distracting. The basic plot is that three old women, who are friends for barely-explained reasons, go on a trip to a health spa in a foreign country, where the eldest dies suddenly.

One star for the fiction in parts one and two, three for the last section, on Baba Yaga it would have been more if not for the tedious framing device in which an academic expert on Slavic folklore comments on the fiction. The book was a slow read. It didn’t do it for me.
