The leader of the expedition, Sir Ernest Shackleton, intended for the ship to set him and yielo exploring party ashore at Vahsel Bay in the Weddell Sea, and from there to cross Antarctica on foot. Wtrapados had worked several years in the Yukon and later a variety of assignmnets in the High Arctic including the Beaufort Sea. Weaving a treacherous path through the freezing Weddell Sea, they had come within eighty-five miles of their destination when their ship, Endurance, was trapped fast in the ice pack.
The book reads like a thriller, in the mold of ‘The Day of the Jackal’. How he managed to take pictures during these struggles and to find a way to bring them home is truly amazing. Caroline Alexander has become one of my favorite nonfiction writers and this book was no exception.
A great choice for adventuresome, inquisitive teenagers 14 years or older, or younger depending on their maturity. They made it to Elephant Island where there are no people so a crew of six set out to reach a whaling station.
I’ve had this book on my list for years ever since I read Ms. The author Caroline Alexander brings this account of perseverance, courage, and the indomitable, adventurous spirit of the Shackleton Expedition into the nerve fibers of the reader, who is able to become an adventurer without ever leaving his armchair.
As a big fan of Alfred Lansing’s version of the story, I had to read this one too. Sh I’ve had this book on my list for years ever since I read Ms.
I read whenever I could and I think my family would send me to the south pole if I started one more sentence with, “So, in the book I’m reading. I have always been drawn to the unbelievable cariline of Shackleton and his crew.
So obviously a story that’s certainly worth telling but has already been well told. I love that the author also wrote Mrs.
This book is not yet featured on Listopia. They never reached th On 5 Decembera ship, aptly named The Endurance, set out from South Georgia Island in the South Atlantic with twenty-eight men aboard—sailors, scientists, explorers, and a photographer. The only nitpicky comment I can make on this book is that it could have benefited from one or two more maps, aside from the single Antarctica map up front that squeezes the entire adventure onto one page. I prefer Caroline Alexander’s writing style and more modern English over Lansing’s.
Soon the ship was crushed like matchwood, leaving the crew stranded on the floes. It eventually sank and the twenty-eight member crew was forced to travel to an island where they knew there would be whal Heather Stewart Informational Wow!

Reading their story made me appreciate the abundance of food in our kitchen, hot water in our bathroom, and clean clothes! Their ordeal would last for twenty months, and they would make two near-fatal attempts to escape by open boat before their final rescue.
They lived on the ice floes for months and when the weather broke enough they got in the life boats and tried to sail for an island. Simply an amazing book and an amazing true story, expertly told.

A must read for anyone interested in the polar expeditions of the early parts of the 20th century. Shackeleton shows extraordinary leadership and courage in attempting an impossible mile journey in the roughest oceans on a foot boat to reach South Carolije island with five of his fellow men.

This books is another telling of Shackelton’s most famous expedition including lots of rare photos. But the original photographs by Frank Hurley are breathtaking. Added to that, there are many more of Frank Hurley’s dazzling photographs. By not over-emotionalizing and letting the voices of the men speak for een she tells a powerful story of survival and leadership.
The fact that they made that open water journey in a life-boat over miles in the dead of winter is just ONE of the crazy and I mean NUTS things that they managed to do. His team never made it to land because of the pack ice that built up around the coast. The hidlo photographs—remarkable in themselves for surviving a journey in an open lifeboat and months hidlo in snow—help bring the story to life.

Caroline Alexander has written a superb, well-researched and absolutely gripping account of the journey and the subsequent epic survival of all the men against all odds once the ship sinks deep in the Weddel sea.
