I agree — really interesting kwtherine, probably the greatest king we never had. There’s no reason to wonder how everything will turn out when Wikipedia exists. There is no evidence for this and it is a wee bit libellous even if everybody involved has been dead for over years. It’s never all that clear.

She is one of my favourite women of history. I never heard that about the date of birth. Two of her books are classics in their genre and continue in their popularity to the present; Katherine, the story of Katherine Swynford, the mistress and eventual wife of John of Gaunt, and their children, who eventually became the basis for the Tudor and Stuart families of England, and Green Darkness, the story of a modern couple plagued by their past life incarnations.


Set in the vibrant 14th century of Chaucer and the Black Death, the story features knights fighting in battle, serfs struggling in poverty, and the magnificent Plantagenets—Edward III, the Black Prince, and Richard II—who ruled despotically over a court rotten with intrigue. The conclusion of “Katherine” is quite rushed in comparison to the whole of the novel but does well with summarizing what happens to key figures. This story of lusty Katherine the Flemish wench, sister-in-law of Chaucer and lover of a Royal Duke, wife of a stunningly boring man who just ups and dies most handily one day, and mother of something like six or seven kids now doesn’t that make your baby-maker sore just thinkin’ about it?
